What businesses ask about backup & business continuity

How often should backups run?

For most businesses, continuously or hourly for critical systems and at least daily for everything else. The right answer comes from your recovery point objective — how much work you could afford to re-do. A business that would lose a day of order entry needs far more frequent backup than one that would lose a day of document edits.

Because we restore it. Scheduled test restores are performed and documented as part of the service. This is the step most commonly skipped in the industry, and it is precisely the step that determines whether a backup has any value at all.

Only if it is designed to. Modern ransomware deliberately targets backup files and network shares, and a conventional backup can simply be encrypted along with everything else. Immutable, versioned offsite retention is what makes recovery possible — encrypted data cannot overwrite a locked prior copy.

Yes. Cloud providers protect their infrastructure and guarantee availability; they do not protect your data from deletion, malicious action by a user, or ransomware encrypting synced files. Native retention windows are limited and are not equivalent to backup. Cloud data needs independent backup as much as on-premises data does.

A written document covering four things: what gets backed up and how often, how quickly each system must be restored, who does what during an outage including contact details, and evidence that restores have been tested. That depends on the recovery time objectives agreed during design, and on what you are willing to invest to meet them. Local backup enables rapid restoration of individual systems; a full site loss depends on your offsite architecture.
